Why We Back Champion — And Why You Should Too

We sell a lot of gear at Recovery and Winch — winches, hoists, recovery equipment, lighting — and we're choosy about what gets on the shelves. Every brand we stock is one we'd use ourselves. Champion Power Equipment is no different.

We've been selling Champion generators for a while now, and the more we work with the brand, the more we rate it. Here's why we back them — and why we think they're the right choice if you're looking at a portable generator this summer.

We've Spent Time With These Machines

We're not the type to list something on the website and hope for the best. We want to understand what we sell — because when a customer calls with a question, or something needs sorting, it's our reputation on the line.

Champion caught our attention for a few straightforward reasons. Their inverter generators — the suitcase-style units like the Mighty Atom and the Atom Fusion — are genuinely well made. They're light, they're quiet, and they produce clean power. That last point matters more than people think: true sine wave output means you can safely run laptops, phones, TVs and other sensitive electronics without worrying about damaging them. Try that with a cheap open-frame generator and you might not like the result.

The Mighty Atom weighs under 18kg. That's lighter than a lot of 2000-watt generators, and this one puts out 2200 watts. You can actually pick it up with one hand, throw it in the boot and go. The Atom Fusion steps it up to 3000 watts at just 21.5kg — still genuinely portable, but with enough power to run a fridge, a few lights and charge your devices all at once.

Dual Fuel Makes Sense

One thing that sets Champion apart from a lot of the competition is their dual fuel range. The dual fuel Mighty Atom and the dual fuel Atom Fusion can both run on petrol or gas (LPG) — and switching between them is dead simple.

Why does that matter? Gas bottles store indefinitely. Petrol goes stale after a few months if it's sitting in a jerry can in the shed. If you're buying a generator for home backup — to have ready for a power cut, a camping trip, or to keep in the van — gas means it'll start first time even if it's been sitting there since last summer. LPG is also cheaper to run and produces fewer emissions than petrol. For anyone who uses their generator occasionally rather than every day, dual fuel is a genuine advantage.

The Backup You Don't Think About

We've written before about storm preparedness and power outages — and those posts tend to do well when the weather turns. But generators aren't just for emergencies. As the weather picks up, more people are using them for everyday things: powering a gazebo at a family event, running tools on a job site with no mains supply, keeping the caravan comfortable on a weekend away, taking power off-grid to a campsite, or just having a reliable power source at an allotment or workshop.

A suitcase inverter is perfect for all of that. It's not a hulking open-frame unit — it's the compact, quiet machine you grab without thinking twice. The Mighty Atom is rated at 58 dBA, which is measured at 7 metres — about the volume of a normal conversation at that distance. Up close it's obviously louder (as any engine would be), but compared to a traditional generator it's a different world. You can comfortably hold a conversation next to one without raising your voice.

What Sets Champion Apart

There are other inverter generators on the market. Some are decent. But a few things keep us confident recommending Champion over the alternatives.

Three-year warranty. That's not common in this space. A lot of brands offer 12 months and then you're on your own. Champion's warranty tells you they stand behind the product — and it gives us confidence when we're recommending it to customers.

UK and Ireland support. Champion's European operation is based in the UK. That means local parts, local servicing, and someone on the end of a phone who speaks your language. When we need technical backup or spares, we're not chasing a factory overseas — we're dealing with people who know the product.

Spares and service kits are actually available. This sounds basic, but it's surprisingly rare with portable generators. Champion sell proper service kits for each model — oil, air filter, spark plug, spark arrestor — so maintaining your generator is straightforward. We stock the kits and the Champion PowerX 10W-30 oil so our customers can keep their machines in good shape without hunting around.

The range keeps growing. New models, better features, the dual fuel options — Champion are actively developing the product line rather than sitting still. That matters to us, and it should matter to you too.

We've Picked What Works for Ireland

Champion's full range is extensive — from small camping inverters right up to large frame-type petrol units. We haven't tried to list the lot. Instead, we've picked the models we think make the most sense for the Irish market: compact, portable inverter generators that handle the mix of outdoor use, home backup and site work that our customers actually need.

If you're after something we don't currently carry — a larger unit or a particular accessory — just get in touch. We can usually source what you need.

What We'd Recommend Right Now

If you're thinking about a portable generator for the summer — whether it's for camping, the garden, a van, or just to have on standby — here's how we'd break it down:

For most people: the Mighty Atom 2200W Petrol. Light enough to carry anywhere, powerful enough for the essentials, and quiet enough to use at a campsite without upsetting anyone. If you only need a generator occasionally, this is the one.

If you want fuel flexibility: the Mighty Atom 2200W Dual Fuel. Same generator, but with the option to run on petrol or gas. Worth the step up if you want to store it long-term without worrying about stale fuel.

If you need more power: the Atom Fusion 3000W Petrol. Steps up to 3000 watts while staying under 22kg. Ideal if you're running multiple devices or need a bit more headroom for power tools on site.

The full package: the Atom Fusion 3000W Dual Fuel. Top of the suitcase inverter range. 3000 watts, dual fuel, and all the features. If you want the best portable generator we sell, this is it.

All of our Champion inverter generators ship free across Ireland and the UK. We also carry the full range of generator spares and accessories so you're covered long after the purchase.

The Bottom Line

We back Champion because the products are solid, the support is real, and the warranty means something. If you're looking at a portable generator this summer — whether it's for camping, home backup, the van, or just having peace of mind — have a look at the range. And if you're not sure which model suits your setup, give us a shout. That's what we're here for.
